What is Apple TV?
Let's start with saying that it is not a fruit or a TV. but it's a great device to get audio or video content available from Apple into HDTV or into a regular TV with our AppleTV Video Converter..
The AppleTV connects to your TV and then to the internet through a "wired" or "wireless" local area network.
For the cheapest way to get Internet Videos to your TV consider our Pro S-video to 3 RCA cables that allow you to connect your PC to TVs for 1/10th the price and you do not need to be tied to iTunes - you can view other content that you have on your computer. PLUS download internet videos directly to your computer with the internet player - see instructions by clicking on How to download internet videos.
Apple's adcopy is that "If it's on iTunes, it's on your widescreen TV." Well, that's not entirely true, since you can also use your non-widescreen TV.
The AppleTV can only output component video, HDMI video, stereo audio and digital audio. If your TV does not have component video inputs, then consider our Video Converter for the AppleTV that converts the component video on the AppleTV so that you can watch it on a regular TV. The AppleTV does not ship with cables, so make sure you get our cables below.
Click Here to see a short video of the first version of the Main Screen on the AppleTV as it looks on a standard television; we will post videos on how the 2nd version looks. The component video output on the AppleTV was converted to S-Video with our "AppleTV Converter" and then captured and saved as an Acrobat Flash Video. The video is set to replay, so just close the new browser window to stop playing.
The AppleTV connects to your network via an ethernet cable (also known as CAT5) or, if you have a wireless network, it can connect wirelessly to your network. Once connected to your network you can start iTunes on your PC or Mac and watch streaming movie previews as well as access your iTunes library of Movies, TV Shows, Music and Podcasts. You can also copy (sync) your iTunes audio and video library as well as pictures to the AppleTV. The syncing copies the files (up to about 32 gigs) and may take a little time if you have lots of files and if you have a slow wireless connection. Do not turn on the microwave while syncing as the wireless connection will crash. Also, make sure that any bluetooth devices are also turned off, since it can also interrupt your wireless network.
Widescreen vs. Regular TV:
Although Apple states that the AppleTV connects to "widescreen" TVs, you may still be able to connect to TVs that are not widescreen but have component video input (the red, blue, and green connectors - or get our AppleTV Converter to connect to TVs that have s-video or composite video connectors. Most likely, if your TV has component video inputs but is not widescreen, you will have to set the resolution from the AppleTV to 480i - this resolution setting is only available if you connect via component cables (it's not an option if you connect via HDMI). If your TV has component video inputs and is not "widescreen" you may be able to enjoy the AppleTV videos on a "full mode" or an a "16:9" widescreen mode. The AppleTV and the iPod Video both output video on a "16:9" aspect ratio, as opposed to a traditional TVs that use a "4:3" aspect ratio (also known as "full-mode"). The iPod Video has an option to select between 16:9 and "full-mode", but the AppleTV does not appear to have this option available. Some non-widescreen TVs may have a button on the remote that you can press to toggle between a 16:9 aspect ratio and full-mode.
If your TV does not have an HDMI or Component Video input, then consider our exclusive Component Video to S-Video Converter for AppleTV. This gadget will allow you to convert the component video to S-Video and with the optional adapters will allow you to connect to TVs that have a yellow RCA jack for video or a "coax antenna" input. You might already have your video distributed via RF Coax, so this is a must have if you want to distribute the AppleTV videos via S-video, composite video, or RF modulation.
How will the AppleTV look if you do not have component video or HDMI? You can try, at your own risk, of course, connecting the green RCA output from the AppleTV to the yellow RCA input on your TV - the image will be in black and white since the colors are transmitted on the red/blue RCA jacks - however, you will get an idea of how the images will look on a non-widescreen TV that does not have component or HDMI inputs. In order to get color, you will need our AppleTV Converter that converts the component video to both composite (yellow RCA) and to S-Video.
Note:The AppleTV does not ship with video or audio cables; it just ships with a cable for the power. We bundle the AppleTV with cables - see our "AppleTV with Cables" option below; you can also buy the cables separately from us at a very good price.
Apple wants you to download and pay to "watch or listen to from among millions of choices on the iTunes Store."
Alternative Uses for your AppleTV, if you can't get it to work:
1. Just sit on it. It will provide you warm, soothing relief on that part of your anatomy that may be a little tender by now. Maybe Apple will rename it "Preparation A". Just go easy with the remote.
2. Warm Cat Perch. You do not have to teach your cat to lay down on top of it; sooner or later your cat will find it and rest on top of it.
3. Tortilla Warmer. Get rid of the cat and warm your tortillas; if it got any hotter you could make Quesadillas.
4. Frisbee. Need we say more?
Actually, you should not have any problem getting the AppleTV to work, unless you have no clue, but then you can just grab a teenager and they will show you in no time.
